Duties and
Responsibilities:
Health information
specialist obtain, analyze, record, medical, and insurance data. They insure
that this information is recorded properly into medical records so that practitioners
can plan and evaluate the patients’ health care.
There are different
positions within this career such as Registered
Record Administrators, Accredited Record Technicians, and Certified Coding
Specialists. The administrator is in charge of looking over the
technicians and coding specialist. Record technicians ensure that medical
records are accurate. While coding specialist assign and post correct diagnosis
and procedure codes to records and report codes to insurance companies.
Health information Specialist work in hospitals, clinics, insurance
companies, physician offices, and many other medical settings.
Average Salary:
$20,000 - $25,000
(Coding Specialists)
$23,000 - $30,000 (Record Technicians)
$30,000 - $40,000 (Record Administrators)
Educational Requirements: Students should take courses in English, math,
science, and business and information management. Coding specialist must have a
high school diploma, or GED, you can get trained at the job. Registered record
administrators must have an associate’s degree, and pass an examination Record
administrator must complete a bachelor's degree program in the field and pass a
certification examination.
